Source for Far and Near

Voice of the Martyrs offers support to mistreated Christians scattered all over. The leader, Cole, wrote:

This is my 25th year as a Bible smuggler, and I am still astonished at the lengths to which persecutors will go to seek and destroy a book they claim to be fiction. The Bible stands alone as the one book in the world that groups and governments spend an enormous amount of time, money and effort to eliminate.

Why? For many years, we have watched the North Korean government expend significant resources in its attempts to block our Bible-smuggling efforts. They know that the truth of God’s Word is by far the greatest threat to exposing the lies they tell their people.

For us with free access, the Bible is a daily source:

- to refresh hope and peace and desire to serve

- to remind of our heavenly Father’s mercy and strength

- to re-filter messages of stress & self-gratification

- to refocus for the day according to God’s purpose

In a mid-west hotel room, a group of businessmen were attending a conference. One man was much on edge. Snappy, argumentative, high-strung, and getting on everybody’s nerves. After pouring himself a large dose of brackish-looking medicine, he let on, “The pressure I’m under makes me wonder if I am going to crack up. I’ve swallowed several bottles of this medicine, but I don’t seem to get any better.

A colleague said, “Bill, maybe that medicine is alright, but I can give you something for those nerves that will do you more good. I know, because it cured me, and I was worse off than you are. I’ve been carrying a Bible in my bag for the past two years, and I have marked places in it that help keep my mind at peace. Such as, He leads me beside still waters, and restores my soul. I found myself refreshed and peaceful since I’ve been reading on any trip I take. I’m not nearly as nervous as I was.” Bill took the advice, and came to a similar result.

The Bible smuggler (above) adds: We have God’s promise that “the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea” (Habakkuk 2). So we joyfully continue to distribute Bibles no matter the difficulty of danger.

Whether to bring liberation in faraway and forbidden places, or to restore our souls and encourage us for the path ahead, our source awaits as daily bread.
